About the course
This introductory course is designed for those who are new to offshore wind foundations, making it ideal for recent graduates or engineers transferring from other project areas.
The day will begin with a clear overview of wind farms and the fundamental support structures required for foundation design. Building on this, participants will be introduced to the key offshore loads and the basic calculations needed to understand their impact. The course will then cover essential geotechnical investigations and soil–structure interaction concepts, before concluding with accessible hand calculation methods, supported by real-world examples and case studies from Europe and China.
Throughout the course, practical examples, academic papers, and case studies will be used to reinforce understanding, ensuring attendees leave with a solid grounding in offshore wind foundation design and the confidence to build further expertise in this field.
Agenda
1. Overview of Offshore Wind Farms
The course will begin with an overview of offshore wind farms (Energy challenge, Overall farm layout, Site Selection criteria & constraints, Impact of Geology) before looking at the specifics of turbines and wind turbine support structure that are necessary for foundation design. Lastly will be an outline of the challenges in design and construction of support structures for larger turbines in deeper waters.
2. Loads on Offshore Wind Turbine Foundations
This section will start by looking at the loads on offshore wind turbine foundations (monopile, jacket/multiple support & floating) including seismic considerations before examining the calculations necessary for foundation design & design criteria (Limit States etc).
3. Soil-Structure Interaction Issues & Site Investigations
The third part of the course will introduce soil-structure Interaction issues (cyclic & dynamic) related to foundation design, Damping issues, site Investigations required, & cyclic/advanced element testing of soil
4. Hand Calculation Methods & Case Studies
The course will close with an overview of hand calculation methods together with example applications & Case Studies from Europe and China . The methods will focus on Obtaining foundation stiffness for a given foundation and ground profile, Natural frequency estimations for different systems (Monopile supported & Jacket on piles and caissons), & Prediction of deformation of the foundations
Presenters

Subhamoy Bhattacharya currently holds the Chair in Geomechanics at the University of Surrey where he leads the Geomechanics Research Group and is the Director of SAGE (Surrey Advanced Geotechnical Engineering) laboratory. He is also the Programme Director for the MSc course in "Advanced Ground Engineering/Advanced Geotechnical Engineering". Previously, he held the post of Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol, Departmental Lecturer at the University of Oxford and Academic fellowship at Tokyo Institute of Technology as well as industrial positions with Fugro Limited (UK) and Jacobs. He obtained his PhD in 2003 from the University of Cambridge, investigating failure mechanisms of pile-supported structures in liquefiable soils. In his PhD thesis, he proposed a new theory on pile failure which received the 2005 T.K.Hseih award for the best paper in civil engineering dynamics from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE). His further work on piles includes design principles for the foundation design of new generation Floating Production Storage and Offloading platforms, built from his experience designing piles for more conventional offshore structures. This combined experience gives him a unique insight into the problems faced by industry and the methodologies for solving these problems. His current research interest are foundations for offshore wind turbines and he recently wrote two books on foundation design:
Bhattacharya (2019): Design of foundations for offshore wind turbines, Wiley
Bhattacharya, Orense and Lombardi (2018): Seismic Design of foundations: Concepts and Applications, ICE Publishing.
