Wind Actions on Temporary Structures

Wind actions on structures are key to the design of any civil engineering structure. Part 1-4 of Eurocode 1 (EN 1991-1-4) provides guidance for the determination of the wind actions on whole structures, parts of them or elements attached to them. The European Standards EN 12810-1 and EN 12811-1 give specific indications for temporary works equipment and scaffolds, including prefabricated facade scaffold systems.

This course will explain the background and principles of wind loading calculations and will teach how the relevant design standards can be applied in practice. Emphasis will be given to the various factors affecting the wind forces. Tutorials and practical considerations will be used to consolidate the knowledge gained by the attendees and gauge their understanding.

Registration

Introduction to EN 1991-1-4 and its UK national annex

The semi-probabilistic nature of the structural Eurocodes will be explained and discussed, along with its practical implications for the design engineers. It will be shown how the Eurocode EN 1991-1-4 and the UK NA allow the use of equivalent static forces to render the effects of wind loads on structures. Examples where a full dynamic analysis is required will be examined, demonstrating the limitations of equivalent static forces.

Break

Determination of wind velocities, wind pressures and wind forces

This lecture will focus on the procedure to calculate the design values of the wind loads on simple structures, considering all the relevant environmental and structural parameters. The differences between Eurocode EN 1991-1-4 and the UK NA will be highlighted and discussed. The calculations for the design value of the wind pressure for a case-study structure will be used to illustrate the procedure.

Lunch

Specific guidance for temporary works equipment and scaffolds (EN 12811-1)

This lecture will focus on the specific design guidance set up by the European standard EN 12811-1 for temporary works subjected to wind loads. A tutorial example will be used to demonstrate the application of the design standard.

Break

Specific guidance for facade scaffolds made of prefabricated component (EN 12810-1)

This lecture will focus on the specific design guidance set up by the European standard EN 12810-1 for prefabricated façade scaffolds subjected to wind loads. A tutorial example will be used to demonstrate the application of the design standard.
