Connection Design of Timber Structures
The performance of timber structures is largely governed by the connections between the members. Not only the strength but also the stiffness and deformation capacity of the connections determine the behaviour and especially efficiency of the structures. A ductile behaviour of the connections and avoidance of brittle timber failure modes is key in order to assure robustness.
The lecture will cover
1. Requirements on and typologies of connections
2. Design of engineered connection
3. Timber failure modes (included in the new Eurocode 5)
4. Design for ductility and reinforcement
5. Environmental influences on connections
Robert Jockwer is Assistant Professor for Timber Structures at the Division of Structural Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. He did his PhD at ETH Zurich in Switzerland on the topic of reinforcement of timber structures by means of self-tapping screws. More recently he focuses his research on several fields including the structural behaviour of high-performance connections, the reliability of timber structures and connections, the robustness of tall timber buildings and also circularity in timber engineering. Robert is a delegate in the international committee for the revision of Eurocode 5 CEN TC250 SC5 and contributed to the new draft of the chapter on connections. Robert is co-founder of Timber Hub AB, which provides consulting services in timber construction and wood products for the international market.
Attendance certificates are available on request after the completion of the webinar.
