Agenda
This webinar provides a comprehensive introduction to the structural design of steel moment-resisting connections, a critical component in ensuring the stability and ductility of steel-framed structures. Upon exploring the fundamental principles of connection behaviour, including strength, stiffness, and rotation capacity the component method will be presented and discussed. Through practical examples and case studies, attendants will develop the skills to design code-compliant connections whilst the behaviour of real connections tested in the lab will be compared against the codified design predictions for strength, stiffness and deformation capacity. Design examples on flush end plate connections, extended end plate connections and the design of haunches for industrial buildings will be covered.
The webinar will explore the following topics:
1. Introduction to moment resisting connections
2. The component method
3. T-stubs
4. Design of end plate connections
5. Design of haunches
Presenters
Dr Marios Theofanous is an Associate Professor in Structural Engineering at the University of Birmingham. He has published over 100 papers on high performance steel and aluminium members and connections and the development of design guidance. He has received funding of over £ 2M as PI/Co-I in several research projects funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, UKIERI and Network Rail and has supervised 9 PhD students to completion. He is currently leading a research group of 4 PhD students and 2 postdoctoral researchers and is PI/Co-I in two projects on resilient buildings using stainless steel and reuse of carbon steel in construction. His research findings on the slenderness limits and effective width equations of stainless steel sections have been incorporated in Eurocode 3: Part 1.4, 2015 and AISC Design Guide 27. He is member of the editorial panel of the IStructE research journal “Structures” and of the BSI Sub-Committee B/525/9 “Structural Use of Aluminium”. He is a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College, of the UKRI Talent Peer Review College, and a frequent reviewer of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong.
